Are you interested in a Scottish Terrier as a pet?

E-mail Print PDF

The Scottish Terrier Club of Tampa Bay has some of the best resources and best breeders in the entire country.  If you are interested in the Scottish Terrier as a pet you should start right here and submit a request for information or contact Lois Bolding This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. While it is tempting to go to a pet store or look in the newspaper classifieds  we urge you to contact the club before making these decisions.  One of the single most important steps to secure the future well being of the breed and ensure that you receive a happy, healthy, and balanced dog is to resist that urge to go to the pet store.  Instead, we recommend that talk to one of our members to see if there are dogs available.

We have had a great influx of rescues this year and we feel the best way to curb this is to try to focus the club site back on to breed education, breed standards, and breed quality.  Every rescue of a puppy mill dog just helps feed into the cycle of puppy mill production and we are committed to trying break that cycle.  The number one way to do that is to educate the consumer - that's you!  We have to encourage people to look towards careful breeders who stand behind the quality of their puppies.

By contacting the club you are ensuring that you will be talking to members who care and are 100% committed to the Scottish Terrier breed.  What does this mean?  This means that you are guaranteeing that you will only be matched with a dog that is truly a great representation of the breed that has been brought up in the best environment possible.

Club members:

  1. Will carefully consider the good health, and physical condition of the dogs that are bred, and the quality of puppies produced by such breeding.  It is the goal to reduce hereditary defects and ensure that the future generations of dogs are of sound temperament and physical health.
  2. Will never sell dogs  through pet shops, catalog houses or other similar commercial sources of distribution.
  3. Will never misrepresent or fail to disclose known hereditary defects, health or physical condition of the stock offered to anyone else for sale.
  4. Will never violate the American Kennel Club rules regarding record keeping, registration, sale, and transfer of dogs, or the rules and procedures regarding the exhibition of dogs.
  5. Will ALWAYS fully discuss ever aspect of dog ownership to ensure a happy match.  There won't be surprises.

If you are looking for a well-bred show or companion Scottie puppy from one of our club members, please contact Lois Bolding This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Overdue Update

E-mail Print PDF

It's been a long time since an update!

Rescue and Facebook

Rescue and rehabilitation is an important part of the club's activities.  I've long searched for a way to be able to highlight the hard work, the dedicated efforts of members, the willingness of people to open their homes and it appears that Janet has setup a Facebook page that is achieving that goal so I can stop looking.  It features many of the dogs that have been rescued, need rescuing and are looking for homes.  Unfortunately, this continues to be a busy year for all those involved.

Check out the facebook page for lots more up to date rescue information.

Specialty

While rescue is important for the club, the main goal is to ensure the long term well being of the Scottish Terrier breed.  Part of this commitment to the breed comes in the form of shows that feature some of the best Scottish Terriers that the country has to offer. The annual Specialty event is always a great showing of the best of the breed and a great opportunity to view and learn about the unique characteristics of the Scottish Terrier.  The show is important part of the goal to promote and encourage the breeding and maintenance of a high breed standard and high quality dogs.  If you are interested in owning a Scottish Terrier it is a great event to get to see what really makes a Scottish Terrier a Scottish Terrier.

The event is educational, it's fun, and it really is a great day out for dog-lovers.

The venue is an outdoor venue and each year features many outstanding dogs in many different classes.  Our favorite is of course the Scottish Terrier ring!

Please check the News and Events for more information. Please understand that many people are showing dogs and that this commands most of their attention so they may not have time to talk or share - this is a serious show. That said, ringside viewers are often approachable and knowledgeable and may be retired from showing, Scottie owners, or owners of another breed.  My experience finds that many people that have adopted or own Scotties are there just to watch and are very open to talking about their own dogs and their experiences!

AKC Eukaneuba

This year, the Eukaneuba National AKC event is in Orlando.  This is a huge event that draws a large in-person and tv audience every year.  The Scottish Terrier Club will be doing a breed booth, so be sure to visit!  More information.
